Here in 1BS, we’ve been discussing the connection between addition and subtraction in Math as well as continuing our conversations on communities in Social Studies. Ms. Springer decided to connect the learning in a fun way this week. Students were put into 4 groups to build a community. First, they needed to construct their fact family houses. Ms. Springer was the project manager who would approve or deny a design. In each group there was a team leader who’s job it was to keep their group on task as well as an inspector who checked the groups work. On day 2, we brainstormed various buildings and community spaces that are important in a city. Students highlighted some must haves off of the list and then worked together to make a plan for their map. On day 3, students worked collaboratively to create their large map. They also collaborated and shared the pen for their writing assignment for the day to answer some of the questions about what is special about their city.
