In preparation for Orange Shirt Day, the students in 1BS spent the week learning about Indigenous cultures and the historical context of Residential Schools. We started the week off by talking about what the word Indigenous means and reading great stories by Indigenous authors. We discussed how we think school should feel which we’ve been talking about throughout the beginning of a new school year. We then began our discussions on Residential Schools and students wrote how they thought Indigenous students felt in school and the things they would say to Residential School Survivors. On Friday, students were encouraged to wear an orange shirt and we painted messages with our Grade 3 Buddies on the sidewalk.
“Let us never forget the past wrongs that were done, hold on to that knowledge and move forward with love”.
